When choosing stain colors their are some simple facts one should keep in mind.  Here at WoodFloorNY we aim to help you identify these facts and therefore aid you in the process of making a better and more informed desicion in choosing a proper stain color for your hardwood floors! 

Species such as Cherry, Birch, Maple, Ash, and Exotic hardwood floors do not take stain colors so easily.  Mostly because the pores are tight and/or the grain pattern is uneven – which in turn causes uneven stain coloring, blotchiness, and/or the wood floor will not absorb the stain color as much as other wood floor types. 

Pin, Fir, and Cedar hardwood floor species should only get a light application of stain and the lighter spectrum of stain colors versus darker stain colors.

On the other hand Oak, Ash, and Chestnut take stain colors more readily because of their larger pores and stronger grain pattern. 

Regardless of which floor type you have a professional can surely stain any wood floor species but with each different wood floor species comes with different challenges as you can tell.

Here at WoodFloorNY we like to challenge the mind!  As we previously explained their are 3 different finish types when you refinish or screen (buff) a hardwood floor; matte, semi-gloss, & gloss finish.  The finish types are entirely up to the customer, but the floor color does make a difference in your choice!

True or False: The darker the wood floor, the more likely it is that its finish will appear glossy?

Answer: True!

Although, you have the 3 finishing options listed above the floor color does make a difference.  For some reason that darker hardwood floors tend to appear more glossy despite which finish type you choose.

The Janka Hardness Scale is a method used to test the hardness of each wood floor type, dent resistance for durability, and how easy or difficult it would be for each species to be nailed and/or cut.  The hardness of the floor is test with a .444 steel ball.  The more force that it takes for the steel ball to enter the wood type the higher the score of the species!

White Pine (not seen above) is very soft and prone to easy denting, which in turn makes it easy to cut and nail down when being installed with a Janka score of 380.  On the other hand African Ebony rates a 3220 in the Janka Hardness scale because it is very hard and challenging to cut.

Here at WoodFloorNY we like to keep our customers informed!  Many customers do not know about the different hard wood floor species and why some wood floor species versus others are prefered.  Here are some tips that might help you, the customer, make a more informed decision next time you choose your hardwood floors.

Appearance: Oak hardwood floors or Ash hardwood floors have an open or pronounced grain versus Maple hardwood floors, Yellow Birch hardwood floors, or American Cherry hardwood floors which have a more closed, subtle, or tighter grain pattern.     

Durability: If you have an area in your home or a commercial area that is high traffic you would probably want to steer clear of American Walnut hardwood floors or American Cherry hardwood floors, since they are they are softer species and you might prefer a Maple hardwood floor or an Oak hardwood floor since they are a harder and a more durable species.

Stability: Here in the north we see a high degree of change in our temperatures and various seasons, therefore, if we have hardwod floors it is possible that you might want to pick a floor that can withstand these varying changes.  For this reason you might want to steear clear of Maple hardwood floors for example.
